BIOGRAPHY of CHRISTINA DIONNE SANDERS
Christina Dionne Sanders is a passionate politico, an adjunct professor of political science, political commentator, author and voting rights expert.
Christina serves on the Texas advisory committee for the United States Commission for Civil Rights and is one of America’s youngest civic engagement leaders. Her practical expertise is engaging and training women and young people to be involved and participate in elections, voting and public policy.
Sanders, a Houston native, co-authored a manuscript entitled,” From “Block the Vote to Protect the Vote”: Historically Black Student Voting Suppression and Disenfranchisement in Texas”, published in Volume XIV of the Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy; making her one of the country’s youngest student Voter Disenfranchisement scholars.
In the Fall of 2013 she for ran for Houston City Council, District D, one of the city's most under-served, yet promising council district in Houston. Her campaign came in fourth in a crowded field of 12 candidates in the open-seat race.
Christina is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Lawyers’ Committee of Civil rights Under the Law “Young Champion of Justice Award” and the Spirit of Democracy award as recognition of courage and outstanding work in protecting the voting rights of students at Prairie View A&M University. The Houston Defender suggested that through her work she is following in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s footsteps.
Christina has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Texas Southern University and an M.P.A. from the Jordan-Leland School of Public Affairs.
